Imagine Yourself in My Shoes

This is a very important topic that I hope you will share with everyone you know. Recently, I was in the car with my husband and Joshua, driving around and looking at scenery… basically getting Josh out of the house with nothing else to do, except drive around. He loves to ride around and listen to the radio. My husband and I have some great conversations during these times. This time, as we often do, we were discussing autism and its difficulties. We love our son to no end and would never give him up, want him out of our lives, or want to go back in time and not have him. That being said, raising him has been no picnic, but then again, raising children is no picnic no matter the circumstances. As our discussion progressed, it suddenly occurred to me how this conversation might affect his feelings. He never shows if he is paying attention to us and we can’t tell if emotions are arising in him, so we tend to think he is not listening. We are not sure how much he understands. But what if he is listening? What if he does understand? This article says it best; straight from an autistic person’s words. I have to believe that people of all disabilities must feel this way. After this realization and especially after reading this article, I will never speak of the difficulties in his presence again. I will only speak of how much joy, love, and wisdom he has brought into my life when he is present. Click the link below to read the short but powerful article. Take care, Friends!
